I have no issue with pro sports teams wanting to hire people with experience. John Hufnagel's winning past and connection to the glory days of the Calgary Stampeders make him a terrific hire for that particular team. Wally Buono's success over 13 years in Calgary more than justified the B.C. Lions decision to hire him back in 2003. I have nothing against somebody with experience. What I take issue with, is the CFL's inability to think outside the box and look at fresh blood.
So now that most of us have buckled down for the long winter ahead, what's next? With our first change in government in 16 years and our first Grey Cup championship in 18 years all happening in the month of November alone, what is there to get excited about in the months ahead?
This is a great time for christmas to come in and for us all to get our rest, but unlike the last few months, I'm left puzzled and wondering when the next big story will blind-side us all like a head-on collision.
I never thought I would ever reach this point, but at the risk of sounding Drew Remendaish, I will admit I think I'm sick of the Riders!
For those of you who missed out on the outdoor parties after last night's Grey Cup win, I feel for you, cuz it was a blast. For me, downtown Regina was a zoo! Traffic jams with people honking their horns and shaking vehicles while celebrating in the streets and making noise until the wee hours of the morning. It only happens once every few decades, so we as the Rider nation need to take advantage of these opportunities! God bless every-one who took to the streets and celebrated in a rowdy but safe manner. And let's hope there's plenty more where that came from in the years to come.
Our province should absolutely let it's hair down! We only get this chance once every decade(if we're lucky)! Please, I urge you all to be good to yourself and every-one around you on this Grey Cup Sunday. No matter what happens to the Riders, just savour the moment. And enjoy it as much as you can. Don't think about next year, don't think about anything that's bothering you! Just let it all go! This is our time! The world is watching, so let's soak it up! For all we know, this chance may never come again.
So let's recap a little history, shall we:
1992,........Danny Barrett leaves the Calgary Stampeders before the season begins only to watch his his old team capture the Grey Cup that season.
1994,........Eric Tillman replaces B.C. Lion quarterback Danny Barrett with(where have we heard this before?) Kent Austin and proceeds to win a Grey CUp with Danny watching from afar.
1998,.......Stampeders quarterback coach Danny Barrett leaves to join the B.C. Lions only to watch his old Calgary team win another Grey Cup without him.
Some in Toronto have suggested that a non-Argo Grey Cup has hurt this year's festivities. It's been bantied about that a city with little interest in the Canadian Football League, will have even less in a game not involving their own team. I, for one, disagree with that notion all together. I am of the belief that a prairie hoe-down is just what the centre of the universe needs. Toronto football fans haven't seen the fun side of the Canadian Football League yet since they've been surrounded by themselves for so long.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will undoubtedly wear those god awful gold retro uniforms upon Sunday's Grey Cup kickoff, therefore meaning the Riders should be able to wear their retro green. Those Bomber uneys have been acknowledged as a neutral colour which can be worn against home or away jerseys. My vote is for the Riders to wear their own throwback jerseys. It would only be right to do it that way in light of their last Grey Cup trip to T.O. And besides, the safeway "S" worked just fine to beat the Blue Bombers back on labour day.
The noise level of B.C. Place doesn't usually get that loud, except for some mysterious reason when the western final is on. Hmmm. Okay, I realize that a crowd of 50 thousand-plus may have something to do with that, however the noise of last year's western championship sounded almost unnatural. And so I was hardly surprised to discover the CFL plans to monitor the crowd noise this weekend and if it's discovered the sound crew of B.C.
Wally Buono's delightful playoff mustache is drawing comparisons to that of the legendary Ron Jeremy.
